Mining and ResourcesLidar can be used to create very accurate digital terrain models with all surface features removed, so that only the underlying terrain is exposed. Accurate "bare-earth" terrain models are invaluable for planning new mining operations. Also, lidar data acquired at different times can show the development of mining sites, and progress of rehabilitation work. The image on the left shows the temporal changes that have occurred at an open-cast mine site. Run your mouse over the image to see the changes, over time. Changes in terrain height and vegetation cover are clearly shown as the mine has expanded westwards. |
